About ungovernable.tech

ungovernable.tech is an independent library of the technologies that let people stay private, connected and sovereign: anonymity networks and censorship circumvention, secure messaging and off-grid mesh, sovereign naming and identity, self-custodied money, decentralized storage and compute, confidential computing, and the cryptography underneath it all.

It started in 2024 as a short list of links to building blocks for a better, more decentralized internet, one that enables freedom from surveillance capitalism and governmental overreach, focused on topics that do not get enough attention. It has grown into a reference with explainers, deep dives, practical guides and weekly research briefings.

Who it is for

  • People under surveillance: activists, journalists, organisers, dissidents and the people who protect them.
  • People behind censorship: anyone whose government blocks, throttles or switches off the internet.
  • People who want to be sovereign individuals: to hold their own keys, money, identity and data.
  • Node runners who add capacity and independence to free networks.
  • Builders: developers and researchers designing systems that should not need to be trusted.

What we believe

  • Privacy is a precondition for freedom, not a luxury.
  • Cryptography and open protocols are more durable than promises, policies or legislation.
  • Decentralization is only real when many independent people run the infrastructure.
  • Every tool moves trust somewhere. Saying where, honestly, is the most useful thing a guide can do.

How it is written

Each entry tries to answer the same questions: what problem does this solve, what does it trust, how does it fail, how hard is it to use, and how ready is it. Technology entries carry a readiness rating, from battle-tested to research, and cautionary or historical where that is the honest label. The method is described in How we evaluate.

Entries are compiled from our ongoing research notes, which track these fields week by week, and from guides written for this site. Dated briefings preserve what was known at the time; explainers and deep dives are revised as things change.

What it is not

It is not legal advice. Some of these tools are restricted, or their use is punished, in some countries. Know the law where you are and weigh it in your threat model. It is also not an endorsement: listing a project in the directory means it is relevant, not that we vouch for it.

Privacy

This site sets no cookies and loads no third-party fonts, images or ads. To see which pages are read, it uses Plausible, cookieless open-source analytics that we self-host at analytics.cypherpunk.cloud. It counts page views, referrers, country and browser type in aggregate; it stores no cookies or IP addresses and does not track you across sites. Blocking that script, or disabling JavaScript, opts you out without breaking anything.
